4. Call for proposals at the Nancay Radio Telescope - DL 22 Octobre 2008

Call for Key Project proposals at the Nancay Radio Telescope and call for standard proposals for semester 2009A.

Deadline : 22 October 2008

The Nancay Radio Telescope (NRT, France) is a high sensitivity (1.4 K/Jy at 21cm) meridian telescope(*) with full polarization capability in the frequency range 1.2- 3.4 GHz. It is operated by the Observatoire de Paris, the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique and also funded by the Region Centre. The NRT is open to the international community.

The Key Project status is intended for applications which demand large amounts of telescope time (> 1000h for 2 years) or for long term monitorings. This status is given for two years, and up to 70% of the available observing time will be devoted to KP.

Observations and data processing can be made remotely. It is of course possible to come to Nancay to observe and process the data.

The Meudon, Orleans and Nancay scientific and technical staff provide support for the preparation of the proposals, of the observations, and for the data processing if requested.

On y parlera francais.

7. The role of Astronomy in Society and Culture (IAU S260), January 19-23 2009, Paris

We are pleased to announce Symposium 260 of the International Astronomical Union on The role of Astronomy in Society and Culture to be held on January 19-23, 2009, at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris (France).

For the first time since the founding of the IAU in 1919, a Symposium is devoted to the exploration of the many relationships that Astronomy has established with the different cultures across our planet.

The 4.5 days of scientific sessions will be evenly divided into three main programs, dealing with cultural aspects, astronomy in society, and educational issues. They should help to bridge the gap not only within the astronomical community at large (astronomers, amateurs, planetaria, teachers) but also, and more importantly, with our societies. The programs consist of invited reviews, contributed talks and posters. The conference talks will be published by Cambridge University Press in the IAU Symposia Series.

An art exhibition featuring works from artists inspired by astronomical phenomena is also organised within the activities of the Symposium, with a forum for discussions on these topics with the artists present.

The conference is now open for registration. For submitting contributions, and further details on the conference, please visit the website

We look forward to seeing you in Paris next January !

8. The 13th Paris Cosmology Colloquium Chalonge 2009, July 23th - 25th, Paris

The Standard Model of the Universe : From Inflation to Today Dark Energy George Smoot Nobel Prize of Physics and Daniel Chalonge Medal Thursday 23, Friday 24 and Saturday 25 July 2009 at the parisian campus of Paris Observatory (HQ), in the historic Perrault building.

The Conference is within the astrofundamental physics spirit of the Chalonge School, this time focalized on recent observational and theoretical progress on the CMB, Inflation, dark matter, dark energy, dark ages and the theory of the early universe with predictive power.

In summary, the aim of the meeting is to put together real cosmological data and hard theory predictive approach connected to them in the framework of the Standard Model of the Universe.

Topics : Observational and theoretical progress in deciphering the nature of dark matter, dark energy, dark ages and the 21 cm line. Large and small scale structure formation. Inflation after WMAP (in connection with the CMB and LSS data), slow roll and fast roll inflation, quadrupole suppression and initial conditions, low CMB multipoles ; quantum effects. CMB polarization, primordial magnetic fields effects. Neutrinos in cosmology.

All Informations about the meeting and registration to it are displayed at the Chalonge School website. Early Registration is strongly encouraged

9. Pathways toward habitable planets, September 14th-18th, 2009, Barcelona, Spain

We are organizing an international scientific conference, to be held on 14-18 September 2009. The venue is the CosmoCaixa science museum in Barcelona, Spain.

One of the most important scientific challenges for the 21st century is the search of habitable worlds around other stars, and the characterization of their atmospheres with the goal of detecting signs of biological activity. This is a long-term, interdisciplinary endeavor, engaging astrophysicists, biologists, planetary scientists, and instrument scientists. Eventually, space missions will address those questions, however today we need to start making intermediate steps. The aim of this conference is to help integrate the prospective efforts in Europe and in the US, build a community around this theme, and bring together several pathways towards that final goal.

The conference will include introductory lectures, invited talks, contributed talks and posters on the major scientific topics listed below, as well as public talks. The conference is sponsored in part by the Spanish CSIC, the Catalan IEEC, the NASA ExoPlanet Science Institute, and the Blue Dots initiative.
