1. New book on statistical methods for astronomy

Penn State’s Center for Astrostatistics announces the publication of the textbook and reference volume Modern Statistical Methods for Astronomy with R Applications by Eric D. Feigelson and G. Jogesh Babu. It is available from Cambridge University Press. The volume is intended for researchers and graduate students in astronomy.

The work first reviews fundamental probability and statistical inference, then addresses several fields of applied statistics : nonparametrics, density estimation, regression, multivariate analysis and classification, censoring and truncation, time series, and spatial point processes. The astronomical contexts are described, and methods are implemented using modern astronomical datasets in the R public-domain statistical software environment. Appendices provide an introduction to R and describe 19 astronomical datasets for statistical exercises.

Table of Contents, datasets, R scripts, and a purchase discount can be found here.

- 1. Title and type of proposed session
- 2. Summary of the goal(s) of the session
