Dear colleagues,
We are pleased to inform you that abstract submissions are now open for the 2022 Cospar scientific assembly (16-24 July 2022, Athens, Greece). In particular, we draw your attention to the scientific event E2.2 : CATALYZING PROGRESS IN OUR UNDERSTANDING OF THE PHYSICS OF SOLAR AND STELLAR ERUPTIONS VIA DATA DRIVEN SIMULATIONS.
The rationale of the session is as follows : “Recent advances in computational power and theoretical understanding of solar magnetic fields have enabled the simulation of sunspots all the way to the formation of fully-developed Active Regions (ARs), and even successfully produce eruptive flares in the simulated solar corona. Radiative 3D MHD simulations, and, in particular, evolutionary data-driven modeling efforts, driving with observed time sequences of vector magnetograms simulations of eruptive events are being explored and developed. This session invites contributions on solar and stellar AR modeling in balance with contributions from an observational standpoint to cover multiple aspects of (1) the physics of AR formation and evolution, (2) the formation of pre-eruptive structures, and (3) the initiation of solar/stellar eruptions. Understanding the role of the evolution of magnetic fields is key in determining why some ARs are not strong sources of space weather while others pose dangers for space exploration, our modern civilization, or for exoplanet habitability.”

Registration is free of charges but mandatory.
Rationale : The observational data gathered by state-of-the-art astrophysical facilities provide our primary source of information towards a better understanding of the impact of the interstellar medium physics and chemistry on high redshift galaxies, on star and planet formation in the Milky Way, or on the emergence of life. Opening up new regions of discovery space through increased sensitivities, angular and spectral resolutions, polarimetry, survey speeds, multi-wavelength multi-carrier studies is essential to understand these fundamental questions of astrophysics.
This 4-day workshop aims first at mobilizing the community on the observatories under construction or evolution and on long-term research and development activities, both for ground and space observatories. It also aims at defining the scientific challenges of PCMI community within the next 5-15 years to define the space of parameters to be explored and the associated observatory characteristics.
This workshop is also about presenting current science with foreseen developments. Indeed, the science of today predicts the needs of tomorrow. The laboratory astrophysics part of the community is essential in this workshop. It is important to think ahead of time about the experiments and calculations needed to interpret future observations (eg, the X wavelength domain with Athena). Informing astronomers about what is possible/impossible from the labastro viewpoint is required (eg, the study of ionized dust).

3. ESA Research Fellowships in Space Science
We are pleased to inform you about the opening of the call for European Space Agency’s Research Fellowships in Space Science. The call is opening on 30 August 2021 with an application deadline on 27 September 2021.
ESA‘s postdoctoral Research Fellowship programme offers early career scientists and engineers the possibility to carry out research in a variety of disciplines related to space science, space applications or space technology. Research Fellowships in Space Science specifically offer the opportunity to contribute to ESA‘s endeavour to explore our Solar System and the Universe, and cover the fields of heliophysics, planetary science, astrophysics and fundamental physics.
The research fellowships offer a unique insight into ESA’s environment and activities while conducting cutting edge research. Mentoring and training opportunities are available, as are possibilities to engage with ESA science-related activities (e.g., archive/data science, operations, calibration, communication, citizen science).
Approximately 12 ESA Fellowships in Space Science (SCI) will be offered this year, to join the pool of about 25 Research Fellows. Within the Science Directorate (SCI), we welcome all independent proposals for innovative research associated with one or more of our missions. The Space Science fellowships can be taken up at any of the three sites ESAC (Spain), ESTEC (Netherlands) or STScI (USA) and we encourage applicants to choose sites that allow for best local collaborations. Duration : Appointments are for a maximum of three years. The initial project is for two years. An extension for a third year requires a dedicated proposal and is frequently granted.

Jean Audouze, François Bouchet et Catherine Cesarsky vous invitent à l’hommage qui sera rendu à Diego A. Cesarsky (1941-2021), Astrophysicien, Directeur adjoint de l’IAP de 1983 à 1989.
La cérémonie aura lieu dans l’amphithéâtre Evry Schatzman de l’Institut d’Astrophysique de Paris (IAP), le mercredi 22 Septembre 2021 à partir de 14H30.
