4. Call for applications for the 2012 edition of the International School for Advanced Instrumentation (IScAI), DL 2012 March 1st
The Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias and partner institutions announce the 2012 edition of the International School for Advanced Instrumentation (IScAI).
The IScAI is a collaborative international initiative in higher education that allows acquiring expertise in all areas related to the construction of cutting-edge scientific instrumentation, with a particular emphasis on astronomical instrumentation. The IScAI offers a highly specialized set of courses and laboratory work to be held in research institutions with world-class instrumentation programs and high-tech companies with expertise in design and construction of scientific instrumentation.
The programme consists of five weeks of intensive course work on five different subjects (optics, mechanics, electronics, software and management) related to the design and construction of astronomical instrumentation. These will be held at the headquarters of the *Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC)* in La Laguna, Tenerife (Canary Islands, Spain). The IScAI will start in May 2012 and is open to astronomers, physicists and engineers worldwide. The deadline for applications is March 1, 2012. Enrolled students may be eligible for financial aid.
The IScAI 2012 is funded by the grant "First Science with the GTC", under the Consolider-Ingenio 2010 Programme of the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation.

7. Special session on ASTRO-H at European Week of Astronomy and Space Science, July 3, 2012, Roma, Italy
A one-day Special Session SpS8 will be devoted to the Japanese ASTRO-H mission at the next European Week of Astronomy and Space Science in Rome. ASTRO-H will be launched in 2014 and will carry several revolutionary instruments, like a focusing-optics hard X-ray imager and the first calorimeter on an X-ray satellite. Several European countries and ESA are participating in the ASTRO-H mission, providing a wonderful opportunity for European astronomers.
The special session on July 3rd, 2012 will have the goal of promoting the mission in the European community and to start preparing European astronomers for the successful use of ASTRO-H. The meeting will introduce the different elements of the ASTRO-H mission and instruments, and then focus on the major scientific advances that are expected from the ASTRO-H mission, in particular (but not limited to) :
Galaxy clusters
Active galactic nuclei
X-ray binaries
Supernova remnants
Young stars
We invite the community to submit abstracts for contributed talks and posters until March 30, 2012 on this web page.
All information regarding the EWASS 2012 meeting (registration, accommodation, venue, ...) can be found on the EWASS 2012 web site.
More information about the ASTRO-H mission can be found here.
