1. Call for applications : International Master Course in Astronomy and Astrophysics, DL November 30th 2010

AstroMundus is a recently established international Master Course in Astronomy and Astrophysics that has been selected by the European Commission as an Erasmus Mundus Masters Course within the second edition of the Erasmus Mundus programme. The Master course is jointly offered by :
- the Institute of Astro- and Particle Physics, University of Innsbruck,
- the Department of Astronomy, University of Padova,
- the Astrophysics section of the Department of Physics, University of Rome "Tor Vergata",
- the Institute for Astrophysics, Department of Astronomy, University of Goettingen
- the Department of Astronomy, Faculty of Mathematics, University of Belgrade

Applications are now solicited for the Master course starting in September 2011.

The programme has a duration of 2 years (120 ECTS credits), is developed within a consortium of 5 Universities in 4 different countries (Austria, Italy, Germany, and Serbia), and is conducted in the English Language. The wide variety of expertise covered by our international partnership insures an excellent educational level in all branches of Astrophysics.

We invite applications from top-ranked students that either hold or are expected to obtain before August 2011 a Bachelor’s Degree (or an equivalent certified period of studies of at least 3 years, corresponding to 180 credits in the European Credit Transfer System) in Physics, Astronomy, Astrophysics, Mathematics or closely related fields. A certified good knowledge of the English language is required.

The selected students will carry out their studies in at least 2 and up to 4 of the AstroMundus Consortium Universities and will be finally awarded a Joint Master Degree, complemented with a Diploma Supplement, by all consortium Universities they visited during their studies.

Several Erasmus Mundus scholarships will be made available by the European Commission to both non-European and European students. The selection of students is primarily based on excellence.

Further details are available in the AstroMundus brochure (PDF).

Full information about the AstroMundus programme, the application form, and detailed instructions on how to apply can be found on the web-site.

3. Workshop : Star formation under extreme conditions : the Galactic Center, 6-9 december 2010, Besançon

Tracing the star formation history in the Galatic Center is obviously one of the most important challenges. This prodigious reservoir of molecular gas is an active region of star formation, with evidence of starburst activity in the last 100.000 years. Understanding the processes occurring in the nuclear disk of our own Galaxy is interesting not only for insight into our own Milky Way Galaxy, but also because its study can potentially provide a template for the closest galactic nuclei. This important region of the Galaxy hosts several sources of energetic activity, and is the site of massive molecular clouds with pockets of past and present massive star formation.

In this context, we plan an international workshop on these exciting new topics trying to understand the processus of star formation in the Galactic Center. The goal of this conference is to discuss the various aspects of star formation in the CMZ but aims also in discussing stellar populations in general as well as other aspects such as interstellar extinction.

4. IAU General Assembly, 20-31 August 2012, Beijing, China

You are reminded that the 2012 General Assembly will take place in Beijing from 20-31 August 2012. In anticipation of a full scientific programme, you are reminded that the closing date for the submission of Letters of Intent for 2012 Symposia (6 at the GA, 3 outside the GA), Special Sessions and Joint Discussions is 15 September 2010.

The form for electronic submission can be found HERE. Note that this form should be used for Symposia, Special Sessions and Joint Discussions. The scientific programme of the General Assembly will be decided by the IAU Executive Committee at its meeting in Prague, May 24-26 2011.
