1. Conference "Hot topics in general relativity and gravitation" - 28 Juillet - 3 Août 2013, Vietnam

We are organizing for the summer 2013 in Qui Nhon, a very nice coastal resort town in central Vietnam, a conference on "Hot topics in general relativity and gravitation".

This conference will be held as part of the framework of the "Rencontres du Vietnam" and is planned for July 28 to August 03, 2013. Our aims are to discuss and review many recent developments in :
1. Astrophysics of compact objects
2. Gravitational waves (experimental and theoretical)
3. Experimental gravity and tests of general relativity
4. Alternative gravity theories motivated by cosmology

At the same time of this conference and in the same place, there will be also another conference covering all experimental and observational aspects of Cosmology. The two conferences will be organized in such a way that there will be a large overlap between them, with common plenary sessions, and a lot of shared discussions.

We invite you to register to the conference through our website where you will also find more information on the program and details about the organisation of the event.

2. Science Workshop "PLATO 2.0" - 29-31 Juillet 2013, ESA-ESTEC

The PLATO 2.0 Science Workshop will take place on July 29-31 2013, and will be hosted by ESA-ESTEC in Noordwijk, The Netherlands. The workshop shall examine the impact that PLATO will make on all areas of exoplanet, stellar, and legacy science areas.

The workshop is now open for registration and submission of talks using the online forms on this web site.

The deadline for submission of abstracts is 28 June 2013 and for registration 12 July 2013. There is no fee for attending the workshop.

3. Rappel : School in Astrostatistics 2013 : regression in astrophysics, methods and applications - 21-25 Octobre 2013, Annecy

This École d’Astrostatistique 2013 is devoted to the regression, which is the art to predict, or explain a variable called dependent, to be predicted or explained, from variables called independent, predictive or explicatives. This theme is central in astrophysics where the data analysis, the understanding of the different parameters and observables, and the fitting to models, are ubiquitous.

No specific knowledge of statistics is required, the mathematical background of all astronomers is sufficient to attend the school.

This school is a École Thématique du CNRS 2013, supported by INSU. The participation of CNRS personnel is thus free. For non-CNRS personnel, a fee of 500 euros (organization and full board) is requested.

The number of participants is limited to 36.

4. Open call for the preparation of follow-up observations of gravitational wave event candidates

Dear colleague,

We want to let you know we are requesting "Letters of Interest" for professional astronomers interested in the identification of electromagnetic counterparts to gravitational wave triggers found in the future science runs of LIGO and Virgo Advanced detectors, which will start in 2015.

You can find more details in this document and in this web page.

We will update this web page with more news on the meeting and the process as they become available, please bookmark it and consult periodically if you are interested.

You can submit a Letter of Interest before July 26 (or email with any questions) to emf@ligo.org . We expect those of you who will submit a Letter of Interest to attend one of the meetings that will be held in Amsterdam (August 29/30) or Chicago (September 10/11) ; details on these meetings will be posted on the web site.

We look forward to your participation in a new exciting era of gravitational wave astronomy !

Gabriela Gonzalez (Spokesperson of the LIGO Scientific Collaboration), and Jean-Yves Vinet (Spokesperson of the Virgo Collaboration).

5. COSPAR symposium, session "Exoplanets and Solar Systems : the beginning" - 11-15 Novembre 2013, Bangkok

Dear colleague,

On November 11-15, 2013, the first COSPAR Symposium will be held in Bangkok, Thailand. The meeting will be devoted to "Planetary systems of our star and other stars, and the future of space astronomy". I would like to draw your attention on one of sessions of this meeting, and invite you to submit abstracts (deadline June 30, 2013) : "Exoplanets and Solar Systems : the beginning", November 11-15, Bangkok, Thailand

The aim of this session is to give a picture of the current knowledge of the early epochs and evolution of our and other Solar Systems by presenting the relevant theories and recent discoveries. What is known about the origin, atmospheres, evolution of the exoplanets and the origin of our Solar System will be reviewed. The session will be divided into three parts :
a) Planets around other stars : how exoplanets help acquire a better understanding of our Solar System
b) Origin of our Solar System : what is known about the birth, early epochs and evolution of our Solar System
c) Asteroids, comets, TNO : small bodies as testimonials of the early epochs of our Solar System

Organisers :
Maria Teresa Capria (Italy), Torrence johnson (USA) and Christoffel Waelkens (Belgium)
