1. Pre-announcement of the first ASTRONET joint call for proposals
Under the umbrella of ASTRONET ; FWF, AUSTRIA* ; CNRS/INSU, FRANCE ; BMBF, GERMANY ; NWO, THE NETHERLANDS ; MEC, SPAIN ; SRC, SWEDEN ; (* to be confirmed) have together decided to open the first ASTRONET joint call for multilateral trans-national research projects.
In total, a provisional € 3.5 million of funding will be provided by these organisations for projects for the period 2009-2011. It is expected that 5 to 8 proposals will be awarded.
The call will become effective at the beginning of February 2008 and
will be open for research projects aiming at : “Common Tools for Future Large Submillimeter Facilities” specifically in the areas of :
Numerical simulation and theoretical modelling
Data evaluation infrastructure including data analysis and post processing tools
Provision of atomic, molecular and other physical parameters in a coherent way linked to the infrastructures, and via the development of dedicated database structures.
The focus of the Call for Proposals will be on funding research positions.
All the detailed information on the project requirements and egibility, criteria, forms, guidelines, National Annexes etc. of the Call for Proposals will become available in January 2008 on the ASTRONET website .
The proposed deadline for the submission of proposals is the 15th of April, 23.59 CET.

First SMESE workshop : "Coronal Mass Ejections and Flares : New Insights with the SMESE Project" .

The Small Explorer for Solar Eruptions (SMESE) mission is a French-Chinese satellite dedicated to the combined study of coronal mass ejections and flares. Its payload consists of a Lyman-alpha imager and a Lyman-alpha coronagraph (LYOT), a far infra-red telescope (DESIR) and a hard X-ray and gamma-ray spectrometer (HEBS). Its Sun-synchronous orbit will allow for continuous observations. It should operate by the end of 2012.
The aim of this workshop is to assemble the solar community experts involved in Coronal Mass Ejections (CME’s) and Flare studies in the framework of the upcoming SMESE mission ; to inform the community about the capabilities of the SMESE instrumentation ; to assess how the SMESE mission can best meet its objectives ; to establish specialist working groups and to form links between theoreticians, observers and instrumentalists from both the CME and Flare communities.
