Stellar physics and Gaia

The Gaia satellite was launched in December 2013. It began its nominal scientific mission in July 2014. Since then, two major data releases have taken place, one in 2016 and the second in April 2018. In France a huge investment has been made and still is made for the production of these data and for their scientific exploitation. It is almost one year that the second data release took place which was based on a total of 22 months of collecting data. For the first time astrometric solutions for over 2 billion stars as faint as G magnitude 20 exist. Along with these data are homogenous photometry, kinematics, and stellar characterisation over the full sky. Upcoming releases will see even more exciting products such as spectra of stars and more detailed stellar characterisation.

The high precision observations of individual stars using Gaia data allows one to determine high precision stellar parameters, such as the age and metallicities, abundances and kinematics. Studies of the HR diagrams and brighter single stars with accurate astrometry and photometry from Gaia, along with other data, provide important insights to the intrinsic working of stars. Improvements in our understanding of stellar structure, atmospheres and evolution has a direct consequence also for exoplanetary characterisation and stellar population studies.

In this session we aim to discuss the most recent efforts of the scientific exploitation of the Gaia Data releases that are at the crossroad between stellar astrophysics, exoplanets, and Milky Way studies. We encourage contributions considering:

The session will be planned to consider both exploitation and support of the data releases, and we will also give a brief overview of the past data releases along with a summary of what upcoming releases will bring. We aim to have an overview of the current contributions of French researchers using Gaia for advances in stellar astrophysics.

The session will include invited, contributed talks and poster presentations. We encourage all poster presentations to prepare an electronic version of their poster. This will be available on this page from the time of acceptance of the poster. If you wish to bring a printed poster, then the deadline for submitting the abstract is the 28 April. All poster contributions (electronic/printed) meeting the deadlines will be offered a 1-minute time slot to present a summary of the work.
