1. Sondage “Les activités de recherche française en A&A face à la crise environnementale” – Rappel
La commission « Transition Environnemental » de la SF2A, en association avec le groupe de travail « Défi climatique et écologique” de la prospective CNRS-INSU en cours (dirigé par S. Bontemps, LAB), ont mis en place un sondage “Les activités de recherche française en A&A face à la crise environnementale”.
Ce sondage fait écho à celui proposé par P. Martin (IRAP) en 2019 dont les résultats ont été présentés lors des journées SF2A 2019 à Nice (supports de présentation : http://sf2a.eu/semaine-sf2a/2019/presentations/S00/Martin_S00.pdf).
La version 2024 ajouré du sondage s’adresse à tous les personnels de la recherche en Astronomie & Astrophysique (personnel technique, administratif, non-permanent etc.) – n’hésitez pas à relayer le messages dans vos équipes.

2. Appel à candidature pour la direction du CDS
The function of Director of the CDS will be opened in September 2025 and for duration of five years.
The Centre de Données Astronomiques de Strasbourg (CDS), created in 1972, is a national Research Infrastructure of the French Ministry of Higher Education and Research Roadmap. It is also an internal team of the Observatoire astronomique de Strasbourg, in the framework of an INSU – Université de
Strasbourg agreement. The CDS far-reaching initial charter still governs its activities:
- To collect ‘useful’ data on astronomical objects
- To improve them by critical evaluation and combination
- To distribute the results to the astronomical community
- To conduct research using the data
The formal applications should be sent by E-mail, with a subject line « Director, CDS » to the President of the Committee, Professor Stephen Serjeant (stephen.serjeant@open.ac.uk), before 5th January 2025. Applications will be evaluated by the Scientific Council of CDS who will address a recommendation to CNRS-INSU and University of Strasbourg for the nomination. The successful applicant is expected to have, or develop, a working knowledge of French.

3. Cherenkov Astronomy Data School (CADS 2024), October 14-18, 2024, Paris (France) – Rappel
Nous avons le plaisir d’organiser une école d’une semaine sur l’astronomie des rayons gamma à l’Observatoire de Paris, conçue pour les doctorants/postdocs/chercheurs désireux d’apprendre sur les données de l’astronomie des rayons gamma et les défis spécifiques des observations Cherenkov au sol et de l’analyse des données de haute énergie de sources variées (Galactiques/extragalatiques/transitoires).
L’outil d’analyse scientifique Gammapy, choisi par/pour l’observatoire international CTAO (Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory), sera présenté.
L’école sera structurée en deux parties. Une première partie consacrée à l’introduction sur le traitement des données approprié pour les différentes problématiques scientifiques, dans laquelle les aspects multi-longueurs d’onde et multi-messagers (neutrinos/rayons cosmiques) seront également abordés. Une seconde partie consacrée à des travaux pratiques (débutants et utilisateurs expérimentés).
Les données d’autres observatoires gamma (Fermi-LAT/MAGIC/VERITAS/H.E.S.S./HAWC) seront également discutées. Les cours et les travaux pratiques auront lieu sur deux sites de l’Observatoire de Paris, à Paris et à Meudon.

4. MSE VIRTUAL Conference, October 30/31 & Nov 6/7, 2024, online
Please join us for a VIRTUAL science conference: “Re-envisioning the Maunakea Spectroscopic Explorer within the Future of Large-scale Survey Spectroscopic Facilities.” We will bring our scientific and technical communities together to discuss MSE in the context of the evolving societal, environmental, technical, scientific, and programmatic ecosystem of large-scale spectroscopic facilities worldwide over the next decade.
Based on polling the community, to be a better global citizen, and to accommodate participation from more interested parties from around the globe, we have elected to run a Virtual meeting over 4 days spanning two weeks to enable as much participation as possible.
The meeting dates will be October 30 & 31 and November 6 & 7 and be fully online.
The current proposed time slots, which will be divided into plenary talks and working group breakouts with two, 3-hour blocks each day:
BLOCK 1: 16:00-19:00 GMT
BLOCK 2: 2:00-5:00 GMT -or- 5:00-8:00 GMT (scheduling of the 2nd time slot TDB based on registration)

One of the primary goals/outcomes of this meeting is to identify modifications and update/complete the MSE science case, due to the change in timeline, the enhanced capabilities enabled by the proposed QM-design (notably 18,000+ fibers and a potential gain of 1 mag in blue throughput), and identify how MSE complements other next generation survey facilities.

5. Workshop Cesam2k20 II: Processus de transport, Novembre 14-15, 2024, Meudon (France)
In order to strengthen the community of users around the Cesam2k20 public stellar evolution code, we are organising a second workshop which will take place on 14-15 November 2024, at the Observatoire de Meudon in the Centre de Conférences Jules Janssen for 30 people. This year’s edition will focus mainly on modelling the transport mechanisms of chemical elements and angular momentum. However, novice users of Cesam2k20 are welcome and part of the workshop will be dedicated to installing and getting to grips with the code.
This workshop is aimed at all communities that use stellar models (stellar physics, exoplanets, disks, physics of the Milky Way and of the galaxies, etc.).
We can provide (partial) financial support for people coming from far away or whose laboratory is unable to fund the full cost of their mission. When examining applications, the SOC will be particularly careful to take into account the various biases in the awarding of grants.
We hope to see many of you there!
The deadline for funding applications is the 30th September 2024 (midnight).

6. Conférence Astrophysique française aux fréquences radio: vers SKA, Novembre 12-15, 2024, Paris (France) – Date limite pour résumés 15 septembre
This is the second announcement of the national conference dedicated to radio-astronomy that will be held at ENS, Paris from Nov 12 to Nov 15 2024.

This conference will be an opportunity to discover and share scientific results, methods, and projects of French teams related to the analysis and interpretation of radio frequency data. It will also be an occasion to learn about the status of the SKA project and to reflect on future opportunities.
This national conference will focus on the astrophysics of radio astronomy, across all its frequencies and topics, from cosmology to the solar system.
Even though the main theme of the conference is related to radio-astronomy, projects combining wavelengths are welcome. Non french participants are also welcome to attend.
Most presentations, in english, will be held in plenary sessions, with special attention given to making the presentations accessible to all, whether they are experts in radio astronomy techniques or not. Some time may be reserved for more technical discussions in parallel sessions.
There is no registration fee for this conference, hosted by the École Normale Supérieure in Paris and funded by the Action Spécifique SKA-LOFAR.

After two years of ground-breaking results from the James Webb Space Telescope, this is an excellent opportunity to take stock of the latest results and try to understand what they imply for the physics of galaxy formation. This conference will be dedicated to synthesising our knowledge of the formation of the first galaxies and supermassive black holes and their respective contributions to the reionization of the Universe. Open questions will be discussed in light of new simulations and semi-analytical models that attempt to reproduce a wealth of unprecedented observational constraints. We will bring together observers and theoreticians to tackle the following topics:
- The statistical properties and environment of star-forming and quenched galaxies at high redshift
- The star-formation histories of early galaxies
- Physical properties of high-redshift AGNs and the formation scenarios of massive black holes and quasars at early times
- Confronting theoretical predictions with the most recent observations of early galaxies and AGNs
- The reionisation history of the Universe

8. Décès de Suzanne Débarbat
C’est avec une grande tristesse que nous vous faisons part du décès de Suzanne Débarbat, survenu le 6 aout, à l’âge de 95 ans.
Suzanne Débarbat était une personnalité marquante de l’astronomie française et de l’Observatoire de Paris.
Embauchée à l’Observatoire de Paris en 1955 comme assistant astronome, elle y a effectué toute sa carrière, tout d’abord dans le domaine de l’astrométrie, notamment en exploitant les observations qu’elle menait avec l’astrolabe de Danjon, puis comme spécialiste en histoire de l’astronomie (histoire de l’Observatoire de Paris, de ses astronomes et leurs travaux, mesure du temps, système métrique, instruments astronomiques), se basant sur les archives de l’Observatoire de Paris, du Bureau des longitudes et de l’Académie des sciences. Elle est l’auteur, dans ces deux domaines, de nombreux articles qui restent des références incontournables.
Suzanne Débarbat a dirigé le département d’astronomie fondamentale de l’Observatoire de Paris (DANOF, devenu depuis le SYRTE) de 1987 à 1992.
Ses travaux ont été reconnus par un ensemble de distinctions particulièrement remarquable: Suzanne Débarbat était en effet commandeur des palmes académiques, des Arts et Lettres et de l’ordre national du Mérite, officier de la Légion d’Honneur et lauréate du grand Prix Jules-Janssen de la Société astonomique de France (2013) et du prestigieux Prix d’histoire des sciences (« Prix 2019 Paul Doisteau-Emile Blutet de l’information scientifique ») de l’Académie des sciences.
Très renommée au niveau international, elle a été présidente de la commission 41, Histoire de l’Astronomie, de l’Union Astronomique Internationale (1991-1994). Elle était membre de l’Académie internationale d’histoire des sciences, du Comité national français d’histoire et de philosophie des sciences, mais aussi du Bureau des longitudes dont elle avait été présidente, et dont elle ne ratait pratiquement aucune séance.
Elle a fait profiter de nombreux collègues et visiteurs de sa connaissance exceptionnelle de l’histoire et du patrimoine de l’Observatoire. Les discussions avec Suzanne étaient toujours passionnantes, et tous les personnels savaient qu’on pouvait lui poser à peu près n’importe quelle question sur l’histoire de l’Observatoire ou plus généralement l’histoire de l’astronomie. Encore très active jusqu’en 2020,on la croisait fréquemment dans la salle de lecture de la Bibliothèque à Paris, consultant archives, ouvrages et documents en vue d’un ouvrage sur la « dynastie » des Cassini. Suzanne était particulièrement appréciée pour sa personnalité dynamique, serviable et accueillante, dotée d’un grand sens de la répartie.
La disparition de Suzanne Débarbat laisse un grand vide à l’Observatoire et au Bureau des Longitudes. C’est une perte énorme pour nous tous; nous nous associons à la peine de ses proches et nombreux amis.
