NASA Infrared Telescope Facility &#8211; Semester 2026B &#8211; Call for Proposals, Open till April 1<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Call for Proposals for the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF) is open&nbsp;<strong>March 1 until April 1, 5pm Hawaii Standard Time<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/irtfweb.ifa.hawaii.edu\/observing\/callforproposals\">https:\/\/irtfweb.ifa.hawaii.edu\/observing\/callforproposals<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>IRTF supports facility and visitor instruments that offer a unique range of imaging capabilities with broad and narrow band filters and spectroscopic observing capabilities covering wavelengths from 0.4\u00b5m to 25\u00b5m with low resolution of 50 to high resolution of 85,000. Non-sidereal tracking of solar system objects, including near-Earth objects, and non-standard tracking and scanning modes are particular strengths. A co-axial wide field optical imager provides contemporaneous photometric monitoring and ToO target identification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Excellent pre-observing training and supports are available for new observers and those unfamiliar with the instruments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ToO interrupt and time critical programs are supported. Observing is usually conducted fully remotely. It will cover every type of low-metallicity systems, from the epoch of reionization to the contemporary Universe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The conference will be held at the Centre Paul Langevin in the beautiful settings of the French Alps, located near a high-speed train line. At the foci of this revolutionary telescope, a comprehensive suite of versatile instruments designed to address a broad range of astrophysical questions is under development across many European institutes. In this talk, I will present an overview of the ELT project and show the latest progress on its construction. D\u00e9c\u00e8s d\u2019Andr\u00e9 Pellet<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Nous avons la grande tristesse d\u2019apprendre le d\u00e9c\u00e8s d\u2019Andr\u00e9 Pellet survenu le 14 mars. &nbsp;Andr\u00e9 Pellet fut chercheur \u00e0 l\u2019Observatoire de Marseille et enseignant-chercheur \u00e0 l\u2019Universit\u00e9 de Provence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ses obs\u00e8ques auront lieu le vendredi 20 mars \u00e0 15h au fun\u00e9rarium du cimeti\u00e8re St Pierre \u00e0 Marseille.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>N\u00e9 le 29 ao\u00fbt 1937 \u00e0 Marseille, Andr\u00e9 Pellet a rejoint l\u2019Observatoire de Marseille en 1967 en tant que Ma\u00eetre Assistant \u00e0 la Facult\u00e9 des Sciences, apr\u00e8s avoir obtenu l\u2019agr\u00e9gation de physique en 1965. Il y a soutenu sa th\u00e8se d\u2019\u00c9tat en 1979, consacr\u00e9e \u00e0 l\u2019analyse spectrale des sources \u00e9tendues, avec une application \u00e0 la n\u00e9buleuse d\u2019Androm\u00e8de. Il a pris sa retraite en 1996, laissant derri\u00e8re lui une carri\u00e8re riche en contributions scientifiques et p\u00e9dagogiques.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>D\u00e8s son arriv\u00e9e \u00e0 l\u2019Observatoire, Andr\u00e9 Pellet s\u2019est consacr\u00e9 notamment \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9tude de la cin\u00e9matique des galaxies, notamment celle d\u2019Androm\u00e8de (M31), ainsi que d\u2019autres galaxies proches comme M82, M32, NGC 2403 et NGC 4736. Ces recherches, qu\u2019il a \u00e9largies \u00e0 d\u2019autres th\u00e9matiques, ont \u00e9t\u00e9 men\u00e9es essentiellement en collaboration avec des coll\u00e8gues de l\u2019Observatoire de Marseille \u2014 Jean-Michel Deharveng, Guy Monnet, Fran\u00e7ois Simien, Georges Court\u00e8s, Alain Maucherat, Georges Comte, Andr\u00e9 Baranne, Lia Athanassoula, Ren\u00e9e Duflot, Nicole Astier, Annick Viale &nbsp; \u2014 ont marqu\u00e9 une contribution significative en astrophysique. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sur le plan instrumental, Andr\u00e9 Pellet a d\u00e9velopp\u00e9 un spectrographe portant son nom, inspir\u00e9 du nouveau concept de pupille blanche. Il a \u00e9galement particip\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019avancement des tubes images \u00e0 comptage de photon et de l\u2019interf\u00e9rom\u00e9trie de Fabry-Perot appliqu\u00e9e aux sources \u00e9tendues, des innovations qui ont r\u00e9volutionn\u00e9 l\u2019observation astronomique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>D\u00e8s 1969, Andr\u00e9 Pellet, Georges Court\u00e8s et Jean-Michel Deharveng ont observ\u00e9 la galaxie d\u2019Androm\u00e8de avec un \u00e9talon de Fabry-Perot et des plaques photographiques au t\u00e9lescope de 5 m du Mont-Palomar, le plus grand t\u00e9lescope optique au monde jusqu\u2019en 1976. Leurs travaux ont permis d\u2019\u00e9tablir une courbe de rotation embl\u00e9matique, qui a servi de base \u00e0 la th\u00e8se d\u2019Andr\u00e9 Pellet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00c0 cette \u00e9poque, les plaques photographiques avaient atteint leurs limites, tandis que les CCD, bien que prometteurs, n\u2019\u00e9taient pas encore op\u00e9rationnels (ils ne seront adopt\u00e9s par les astronomes que dans les ann\u00e9es 1970). Les intensificateurs d\u2019image ont alors \u00e9merg\u00e9 comme une solution interm\u00e9diaire. Parmi eux, les tubes images magn\u00e9tiques se sont r\u00e9v\u00e9l\u00e9s les plus performants. Pour le Space Telescope (US) et le t\u00e9lescope Isaac Newton (\u00e0 La Palma), Alec Boksenberg a opt\u00e9 pour un tube EMI (Electron Multiplier Image). En France, Jean-Michel Deharveng a mis en service un tube RCA (Radio Corporation of America) de qualit\u00e9 \u00e9quivalente. Pellet et Deharveng l\u2019ont adapt\u00e9 sur un spectrographe n\u00e9bulaire du t\u00e9lescope de 193 cm de l\u2019OHP (Observatoire de Haute Provence), baptis\u00e9 \u00ab\u00a0Pellet-Deharveng\u00a0\u00bb. Ce spectrographe, dot\u00e9 d\u2019un montage optique \u00e0 pupille blanche (invent\u00e9 par Baranne \u00e0 l\u2019Observatoire de Marseille), offrait une optimisation de la transmission lumineuse et une r\u00e9duction des aberrations. S\u2019appuyant sur le concept de pupille blanche, notons que Baranne a \u00e9galement con\u00e7u l\u2019instrument qui a permis la d\u00e9tection de la premi\u00e8re exoplan\u00e8te \u00e0 l\u2019OHP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Enseignant d\u2019exception, Andr\u00e9 Pellet a r\u00e9dig\u00e9 des cours de r\u00e9f\u00e9rence, en particulier en cosmologie et en \u00e9volution stellaire, salu\u00e9s pour leur pr\u00e9cision, leur rigueur et leur souci du d\u00e9tail. Ses manuscrits, v\u00e9ritables mod\u00e8les de clart\u00e9, et de calligraphie restent des outils p\u00e9dagogiques pour les g\u00e9n\u00e9rations suivantes. &nbsp;Aupr\u00e8s de Lise Deharveng, il s\u2019\u00e9tait fortement impliqu\u00e9 dans le DEA \u00ab\u00a0Rayonnement et Plasma \u00bb cr\u00e9\u00e9 en 1985 par Vincent-Paul Kaftandjian et Roland Stamm et qui deviendra le DEA \u00abRayonnement, Plasma et Astrophysique \u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Andr\u00e9 Pellet ne sera pas seulement retenu pour ses r\u00e9alisations scientifiques, mais aussi pour son engagement humain. Professeur passionn\u00e9, chercheur exigeant en qu\u00eate constante de sens, et coll\u00e8gue \u00e0 la fois chaleureux et direct, il alliait modestie, discr\u00e9tion et lucidit\u00e9, sous une apparence parfois un peu sans appr\u00eat. Son h\u00e9ritage, \u00e0 la fois scientifique et humain, a laiss\u00e9 une empreinte ind\u00e9l\u00e9bile dans la communaut\u00e9 astronomique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nous adressons nos plus sinc\u00e8res condol\u00e9ances \u00e0 son \u00e9pouse, Andr\u00e9e Pellet-Masse, \u00e9galement enseignante-chercheuse \u00e0 l\u2019universit\u00e9 de Provence, ainsi qu\u2019\u00e0 leurs enfants, St\u00e9phane et Florence. Son souvenir continuera d\u2019inspirer ceux qui ont eu la chance de le c\u00f4toyer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Philippe Amram<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. En m\u00e9moire du Professeur Paul Smeyers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>C\u2019est avec une profonde tristesse que je vous fais part du d\u00e9c\u00e8s du Professeur &nbsp;Paul Smeyers, survenu pr\u00e8s de Louvain, en Belgique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Le Professeur Smeyers restera dans nos m\u00e9moires comme un scientifique de tout premier plan, dont les contributions fondatrices \u00e0 la th\u00e9orie des oscillations non radiales ont exerc\u00e9 une influence durable sur l\u2019ast\u00e9rosismologie et, plus largement, sur la physique stellaire.
