Registrations open for The RED Astrobiology Introductory Virtual School, June 2nd-8th, 2026

RED is a Training School about the “Basics in Astrobiology”. Astrobiology addresses questions related to the origins of life, its evolution, and distribution in the Universe. This school aims to offer interdisciplinary training in astrobiology to students and young researchers in astronomy, planetology, geology, chemistry, biology, or history and philosophy of science. If you are at Master or PhD level, or an early career scientist, with a subject related to astrobiology, this training school is for you!

From June 2nd to 8th, we invite you to participate in the Virtual RED Astrobiology School. This virtual school is based on the lectures from the “in-person” school held in Le Teich (France) in March 2026. Registering for the school will offer you an opportunity to listen to the lessons filmed on-site, interact directly with the lecturers, ask questions, and engage in conversations with other participants from all over the world!

Participants who watch the whole lecture series and succeed in short quizzes about it will receive a certificate of attendance. Live animations and Q&A sessions will be organized at CEST (UTC + 2), but you can watch the lectures and replays of the Q&A session at your convenience in your time zone.

More information, program and registration: https://red-astrobiology.fr/virtual-registration/

Registration deadline: May 26th

Participation is free of charge, but registration is mandatory

School sponsors: CNES, EAI, PEPR Origins, RRI Bordeaux, IPSL, OASU, OSU EFLUVE, SFE

Transmis par Hervé Cottin

4. Online Talk by Prof Joseph Silk, Tuesday 19 May, 13:00 UTC (15:00 CEST)

The IAU Commission C2 Communicating Astronomy with the Public invites you to an online talk by Prof Joseph Silk on Tuesday, 19 May at 13:00 UTC (15:00 CEST), on the subject Telescopes on the Moon: The Future of Astronomy.

The race to the Moon fascinates a large public all around the world. The aim of this talk is not to give a summary of all the past and future lunar missions, but to show why and how astronomers are interested in building telescopes on the lunar surface in the near future. This subject is interesting for all of us, for ourselves and also to be able to answer correctly the questions raised by the public. Please register below to receive the link to participate in the on-line talk.

Summary

Terrestrial telescopes are in crisis mode because of the imminent deteriorations in the darkness of the night sky. The lunar surface allows a unique way forward that will be actively explored in the next decades. The far side provides a unique radio-quiet environment for exploring our ultimate frontier, the dark ages, some 50 million years after the Big Bang… Dark ages maps at unprecedented resolution will eventually probe the very nature of inflationary cosmology. Gravitational wave telescopes will address the unexplored decihertz gravitational wave signals that will capture the history and growth of merging massive black holes, complementing the science achievable by current and planned gravitational wave observatories. Optical interferometers, operating at ultrahigh resolution and sensitivity in a space-like environment, will provide targets for the Habitable Worlds Observatory and eventually explore nearby earth-like exoplanets for imaging and biological tracers to pose the ultimate question of whether we are alone in the Universe. Permanently cold and dark polar craters will provide potential sites for far infrared telescopes to use the spectrum of the cosmic microwave background radiation to probe our cosmic origins.

After a brilliant international carreer in Europ and in the United States, Joseph Silk is presently Homewood Professor of Physics and Astronomy at The Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, and emeritus researcher at the Institut d’Astrophysique (CNRS and Sorbonne University, Paris).

Please register to receive the link to participate in the online talk

Transmis par Sylvie Vauclair

6.
