1. Call for IAU membership applications, registration to IAU GA 2027, call for proposal to host IAU GA in 2033
I am pleased to inform you of the launch of the call for IAU Members to be admitted in 2027. The official announcement is now live on the IAU website. The deadline for applications is 15 December. We invite you to share the information widely among eligible candidates, both for Individual and Junior Membership, within your National Member scientific community.
As in the previous application cycle, candidates will submit their applications directly through the central IAU application platform. Following the close of the application deadline, your membership focal point will receive access to the submitted applications relevant to your National Member for review and evaluation.
Please note that, based on the valuable feedback received from National Members during the last application cycle, the Eligibility Guidelines and Application Procedure for IAU Individual and Junior Membership have been updated.
Furthermore, we ask for your support in highlighting the opening of the registration and abstract submission for the XXXIII IAU General Assembly 2027 and disseminating this announcement to researchers and institutions across your National Member community.
Finally, I take this opportunity to remind you of the call for proposals to host the XXXV IAU General Assembly (GA) in 2033, which closes on 1 November.
Thank you for your continued cooperation and efforts in strengthening the international astronomical community. We hope to see you in Rome for the GA in August next year.
Please do not hesitate to contact me should you have questions.
Prof. Diana Worrall

3. French-Mexican workshop « Flying Beyond the Universe », 1-4 decembre, 2026, Mexico city (Mexico)
France and Mexico have a long-standing and fruitful scientific partnership, particularly in astronomy. This close collaboration has led to the joint development and operation of COLIBRI, a robotic telescope specifically designed for time-domain astronomy and the study of transient phenomena, notably in support of the Franco-Chinese SVOM space mission. In just over a year of scientific operations, COLIBRI has established itself as one of the most active and efficient ground-based telescopes worldwide for gamma-ray burst follow-up. However, its capabilities extend far beyond this domain, and new scientific projects that take full advantage of its unique capabilities are warmly encouraged.
To foster the scientific exploitation of COLIBRI, France and Mexico have established an International Research Programme (IRP) named ERIDANUS. Its objective is to develop new collaborations and strengthen existing ones across a broad range of scientific topics, from exoplanets to transient phenomena and the development of new instrumentation. The programme is supported by CNRS, CNES and Aix-Marseille University (AMU) in France, and UNAM and SECIHTI in Mexico.
The next workshop, “Flying Beyond the Universe,” will take place in Mexico City from 1 to 4 December 2026. Discussions will cover the latest advances with COLIBRI, preparations for the imminent deployment of its near-infrared camera, and opportunities to broaden the range of scientific investigations conducted with the telescope.
Registration is open until 30 October 2026. To register, simply send an email to eridanus2026@astro.unam.mx.
Funding is available to cover hotel accommodation, breakfasts, lunches and the cultural visit. Partial or full support for travel expenses for French astronomers may also be available, depending on individual circumstances, with priority given to PhD students and postdoctoral researchers. Requests for travel support should be sent to Stéphane Basa (stephane.basa@lam.fr).
